Drought in Jersey – No royals this summer

If you are looking forward to enjoying your Jerseys with your salad this summer you may be disappointed.  Water coolers and water filters may be facing a drought as well as the potato crops in Jersey. 17 days without rain this spring has resulted in the potato crops suffering.  Jersey experienced a similar problem last year, resulting in many farmers investing in irrigation pumps to help hydrate the crops. They have been forced to use the irrigation pumps as early as March this year to aid growth. The farmers of Jersey stress the Island just needs a couple of rain showers to harvest the crops and are concerned how a week of North-Easterly drying winds dehydrates the soil. The weather report for Jersey this week is unlikely to put a smile on the Farmer’s faces. The predicted temperature is approximately 20-21 oC all week without a glimmer of an April shower.  We certainly hope the people of Jersey are able to enjoy a healthy crop of jersey royals this year.
