Solar and Wind Energy clean up contaminated water in Apache Powder
In an effort to help clean up America, the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States is encouraging the development of renewable energy facilities on potentially contaminated and mine sites. Apache powder (now known as Apache Nitrogen Products) began manufacturing dynamite in 1922 for mining and construction projects. Other products were then introduced ammonium nitrate, nitrogen based fertilizer products, blasting agents and nitric acid.  In August 1990, the site was placed on the National Priorities List by the EPA because of ground water and soil contamination. Pure Eau supports any initiative to clean up pollution and to prevent contaminated water. Our water coolers and water filters use a process called ‘reverse osmosis’ which ensures all the water you drink is filtered to remove all contaminants detriment to health. High levels of nitrates in rural areas are effectively removed by the reverse osmosis process.
There have been different types renewable energy used in the clean up water process at Apache Powder. A 4.5 acre tiered hydraulically driven wetland system was used to treat approximately 150 gallons of contaminated water per minute.  Other methods have included a 1.4 KW photovoltaic (PV) panel providing solar power for a centrifugal pump to re-circulate 5 gallons per minute the contaminated water through the wetland cells until the newly treated water reached the discharge cleanup standards. Windmill pumps water to de-water a perched system under the formerly used evaporation ponds which are now capped.  The cost of the solar PV system and windmill pump is three times less expensive than to run power lines and pay for electricity to be distributed to remote areas of the site. The use of solar and wind energy to power the clean up reduces 30 year ground water clean up costs form $25 million to approximately $2.5 million.
