Pure Eau examines Fukushima and the predicted 10 year fight against contaminated water

Pure Eau and the World empathized whilst watching the devastation caused by the Tsunami, as the 14 metre high wave crashed over the Fukushima nuclear plant. Unfortunately, in an attempt to keep the reactors cool and to prevent a nuclear catastrophe, huge amounts of radioactively contaminated water was created in the process. This in itself has created yet more of a headache for Tepsco who own and are responsible for the plant. If this wasn’t a big enough disaster, the contaminated water has remained within the site, and has since drained into the underground trenches which are used for carrying cables and pipes which were flooded during the Tsunami. Lester Brown wrote a startling article for the Guardian 22/4/11 www.guardian.co.uk, explaining Tepco's priority now is to achieve a "cold shutdown", when the temperatures within the reactors are kept below 95C at atmospheric pressure. This prevents the reactors' coolant water from boiling even when the coolant systems are depressurized, a safer condition than an enforced hot shutdown. Tepco has said that it would take about three months to stabilize the coolant systems of the three overheated Fukushima reactors. At the same time, the company must prevent the spent fuel rods within the four storage ponds from heating up. It would then take another three to six months to achieve cold shutdown. As the cooling system has not been fixed, Tepco rely on pumping in fresh water which is then contaminated and some of it discharged into the sea with high levels of radiation. The process to cool the reactors down, plug radiation leaks and deal with the contaminated water is a job which may take at least 10 years but surely cause a lifetime of damage to the environment?
