The ICE predictor: benefits to climatic research

Just as the bark of tree provides us with the information of age by the amount of rings on the trunk, Mother Nature has provided us with clues to climate change by reading ICE – just as long as we know the relevant language of course. The section of the Greenland GISP 2 ice core contains 11 annual layers with summer layers sandwiched between darker winter layers.  Snow which has been compressed begins to form layers and ice that is old, such as glaciers and polar ice caps containing thousands of layers. By looking at the ICE in detail, scientists can look at the data to observe past seasons and reconstruct a detailed climate record over hundreds of thousands of years. But how do they do it? ICE contains dust from volcanic eruptions and desert windstorms. It also contains pollen, microbes, meteorites, small trapped bubbles of "fossil air" and even changes in the concentrations of Beryllium-10 which indicates changes in the strength of solar radiation providing a seasonal record. ICE cores can be several miles long, but are cut into one metre lengths for ease of handling. To get at the data contained in ICE cores, they must be melted so that the water from the outside of the core does not touch water from the centre of the core. The water from the inside of the ICE core is analyzed to see changes in climate. It's a way to look at the interactions between the atmosphere, the ocean and the Earth's surface itself.
