The Eden Again Project – Pure Eau looks at the return of water
The ‘Eden Again’ Project is an organization working to restore the marshlands of southern Iraq and Iran. The wetland ecosystems encompass an area larger than the Florida Everglades. The marshlands had been destroyed during the 1990’s regime of Saddam Hussein. Bbiblical scholars believed the marshlands to be ‘Garden of Eden’. Once the water supplies were lost, the local people known as the Ma’dan, and their way of life had been destroyed and they moved away. Iraqi-American hydraulic engineer Dr. Azzam Alwash and his organization Nature Iraq, are working with the Ma’dan to restore the marshes of southern Iraq, in the hope that nature will be restored and so will the community. Pure Eau understands totally why life cannot continue without endless supplies of pure water as it is the elixir of life. Our water coolers and water filters use a process called ‘Reverse Osmosis’ which removes all contaminants, allowing you to drink nothing but Pure water.
For thousands of years the Ma’dan called the marshes home as they lived on floating islands made of reeds that grew in the marshes. They sustained their community by catching fish, hunting birds and breeding water buffalo. Once the water had gone, the Ma’dan people either migrated to the city or suffered in poverty. Following the end of the Gulf War in 1991, the marsh dwellers were important elements in the uprising against Saddam Hussein’s regime, and were the only link left with this rich cultural past. To end the rebellion, the regime implemented an intensive system of drainage and water diversion structures that desiccated over 90% of the marshes. The reed beds were also burned and poison introduced to the waters. Pure Eau can supply a water filter or water coolers which remove all contaminants through reverse osmosis ensuring you drink plenty of pure water. It is estimated that more than 500,000 were displaced, 95,000 of them to Iran, 300,000 internally displaced, and the remainder to other countries. By January 2003, the majority of the marshes were wastelands. The impacts of marshland desiccation on wildlife were devastating. Several endemic species of mammals, birds, and fishes may have become extinct. The marshlands’ disappearance as a key wintering and staging site in the intercontinental migration of birds placed an estimated forty species of birds at risk and caused significant reductions in their populations. Fisheries in the marshlands disappeared, and Gulf fisheries, dependent on the marshland habitat for spawning migrations and nursery grounds, also experienced significant reductions. Ecosystem damage extended to the Shatt al-Arab and the Persian Gulf.
In May 2003, water began to return to the marshlands through the actions of the local marsh dwellers and Iraq's Ministry of Water Resources. As of May 2004, up to 40% of the former marshlands have been re-flooded. On the ground, some of the re-flooded areas have experienced rapid re-growth of marshland vegetation; other areas are slowly recovering; while some re-flooded areas remain barren. The recovery of the ecosystem has yet to be fully assessed. The Marsh Dwellers are also coming back, with as many as 42,000 people returning to their traditional lifestyles within the re-flooded areas, even though they have now been also exposed to the ways of modern living. When Saddam Hussein drained the marshes in the early 1990s, he almost succeeded in wiping one of the oldest civilizations on earth off the face of the earth itself. With the help of Dr. Azzam Alwash and Nature Iraq, the Ma’dan have proven the resilient force that nature and humanity combined can be and desert becomes Eden again. Pure water is essential in maintaining optimum health. Our water coolers and water filters provide as much pure water as your family and business can drink.
