Pure Eau Against Fluoridation

13 June 2008

In 2003, the BBC reported that ministers Hazel Blears and Elliot Morley (an environment minister), were planning with John Prescott, to allow Health Authorities to increase or add fluoride to all the drinking water supplies in the UK under Amendments made to the Water Bill that same year.

Until then, the water companies made the decision, based on unsubstantiated studies, all water was to be fluoridated on the premise that it would help prevent tooth decay in children.

Critics were fearful that such a measure could be linked to increased risks of cancer, hip fractures, kidney trouble, birth defects and the possibility of depletion in the action of neurones in the brain. Not to mention the increased risk of fluorosis - a condition rising in numbers due to the over fluoridation of water..

At this time, the campaign director of the National Pure Water Association, Jane Jones, said, “There will undoubtedly be a huge row about the renewed proposal to add fluoride to the drinking water on a wide scale in the UK... It is outrageous. To medicate the whole population against their will is not the way to deal with tooth decay”

Now the people of Manchester are having the addition of fluoride imposed on them through their drinking water. In February 2008 Alan Johnson, the Health Minister ordered that  Health chiefs in England with the highest incidences of tooth decay in their areas must proceed with, what the National Pure Water Association have described as “medication”. They say “ Fluoridation is carried out by water companies in violation of their customers human right to refuse consent to any medical intervention.”

Opposition to adding fluoride is strong. Steve Clarke, of 'Manchester Against Fluoridation', told the Manchester Evening News (MEN) that Greater Manchester was being `sold a lie' by the pro-fluoride lobby. Sheila Jones, of the British Fluoridation Society, told the MEN they were `absolutely delighted' at Mr. Johnson's call as dental health in Manchester is poorer than in Birmingham, where water supplies have been fluoridated since the 1960s. She said, "Dental health in Manchester is appalling. Kids in Manchester have more than twice the number of decayed, missing or rotten teeth than in Birmingham, and because of the level of disease ,we put five times more children under general anesthetic for tooth extractions, which can be very traumatic”

Steve Clarke said: "Birmingham does not have a better dental record because of fluoridation, but because they have twice as many dentists. They have extra funding for dentists because 48 per cent of children suffer from dental fluorosis caused by the fluoride in the water.

There are naturally fluoridated areas in the UK but what will be added to the water is chemical fluoride. Fluoride contains five cancer containing agents including arsenic, lead and mercury. Our government would not allow this stuff to be dumped in rivers or landfill, it is extremely toxic. If you wouldn't put it in the landfill why put it in the reservoir?”

There are ongoing arguments both for and against the use of fluoride in drinking water but what is becoming clearer is that it is not a choice of the people. The government are determined to impose this medicating of our drinking water whether we want it or not. The University of York concluded in their research that the studies into the benefits of fluoride in water were difficult to call as the quality of the studies was inadequate, despite where they are from.

Clearly there is enough evidence to question the addition of chemical fluoride, known to be toxic, to drinking water supplies and the idea of mass medication of the UK population is, at the very least, questionable and at worst, a violation of human rights and freedom of choice.
