Update On The Cryptosporidium Contamination In Northamptonshire's Drinking WaterOn Friday, 4th July, Anglian Water informed all residents in Northamptonshire affected by the Boil Water notice that it has now lifted.
The discovery of the cryptosporidium parasite in the drinking water in some areas of the county caused the water authority to alert their customers and advise them to boil all their drinking water before consumption. Anglian Water vans were equipped with loudspeakers and sent out to warn people about the problem. If these actions had not taken place, there would have been many more incidences of cryptosporidiosis than the six reported.
It was later discovered that the parasite was caused by the discovery of a small rabbit, which had is believed to have found its way into a water tank.
Anglian water are reported to have said that the discovery came about as a result of an unusual set of circumstances, but that now steps have been taken to prevent it from happening again.
The alert over the announcement of the discovery of the parasite in the water resulted in the panic buying of bottled water in supermarkets, the closure of twenty schools in the area which relied on tap water for drinking fountains, and a request by the authorities to hospitals, care homes etc to report any suspected incidences showing symptoms of contamination. Symptoms included diarrhoea, weight loss, dehydration, fever and stomach pains.
Installing a reverse osmosis filtration system under the kitchen sink will always prevent the cryptosporidium parasite. It will further prevent other bacteria's and harmful chemicals from entering your drinking water, ensuring clean fresh healthy water at all times.
