Plumbed in water the way to go

29 July 2008

Yesterday, It was reported in the Henley Standard that Henley Management College is to replace it’s plastic water bottle dispensers with plumbed in water coolers in a bid to improve its carbon footprint..

Up until now, staff and visitors have had access to drinking water from bottled water dispensers but in all the training and conference rooms at the College, the installation of mains fed coolers should help the college to meet European ‘green’ standards.

There are multiple advantages of using this type of cooler apart from the green issues such as using, sanitizing and disposing of plastic bottles. The move will ease staff workload as they will no longer have to administer the ordering, storing of bottles, there is no risk of running out of water on hot days, and the transportation costs to the environment will be eased.

As with any large site, replenishing large plastic bottles on their dispensers is very labour intensive. Carrying 5-gallon bottles filled with water over any distance is back breaking work, making staff prone to injury.

Installing mains fed water coolers or water filters also saves large sums of money. At £6 per 19-litre bottle of water, the college is reported to be spending £1000 per annum for each of its 43 machines. The cost of water now with the new installations costs less than 2pence per 19 litres of water dispensed.
