Use of water coolers in Eastern Europe rises

06 August 2008

During 2007, 1.54 million bottled water coolers, dispensers and plumbed in water filters were installed across Eastern Europe.

The East European countries such as Romania, Czech Republic, Poland and Lithuania who have become EU members, account for 47% of all water coolers, dispenser and mains fed water filters. This explains the 230,000 new installations last year, an 18% rise on 2006.

According to Zenith International, a leading drinks consultancy, 2007 sales through water coolers, rose to 11% of total bottled water consumption, that is 1,529 million litres, compared in 1999 to a figure of 4%.
Water coolers and water filters, became a popular way of providing chilled fresh water to work forces in the early 1990’s with Russia holding the largest share of the Eastern European market.

Throughout the whole of the area, it was responsible for 43% of units but with the addition of new EU countries, it’s share is becoming smaller. With the drive for greater industrial and capitalist input elsewhere, other economies are accounting for the extra demand. Last year, Russia’s volume demand was 38% with Poland catching up on 27%. The demand in Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania was 4%, 5% and 6% respectively.

Zenith International are predicting that by 2012, over 3 million bottled water coolers, dispensers and filters will be installed in Eastern Europe, with over 1 million in EU countries. This is a fast growing market in which the British water industry expect to play a major part.
