Water contamination in South Lanarkshire

27 October 2009

In March 2009, the BBC reported that staff and pupils at three schools in South Lanarkshire were warned not to drink the tap water after tests showed contamination.
Concerns were raised by the teachers union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), after high levels of micro-organisms and nickel were found in the water at Holy Cross High in Hamilton and St Andrew's and St Bride's High in East Kilbride.
South Lanarkshire Council insisted supplies were safe but immediately installed water coolers while they investigated further.
A council spokesperson said at the time: “Water samples were taken from various areas in the four schools, including the cold water storage tanks, and following bacteriological and chemical analysis the results of the tests indicate that the water is clear and there is no risk to health.

“A water quality monitoring regime is in place within all South Lanarkshire schools, as per the requirement of current health and safety and water quality legislation.

“There is a process in place at each school for all routine test results to be accessed." The council announced they would look at the tests commissioned by the EIS and carry out further investigations.
Pure Eau supplies water coolers and domestic water filters that purify water, removing 96% of contaminants in water for a fraction of the cost of bottled water.
