Leicester Water

In April this year, Leicester saw a huge new engineering project opened at Rutland Water. The project involves enlarging the present reservoir so that in future years, residents will be able to draw up to an extra 90 million litres of Leicester water a day.

The scheme, opened by Sir David Attenborough, includes a new pumping station at Empingham. Other additions such as 25 miles of newly laid pipes are included in the project.

Leicester’s Rutland Water was created in the 1970’s and is one of Europe’s largest man-made reservoirs. It was originally called the Empingham Reservoir, which was 3100 acres in size and was built to provide water to the whole of the East Midlands; the driest and most densely populated area of the United Kingdom.

The lake is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe; however, it is not used solely for keeping the customers of Anglian Water hydrated. It also provides the local residents with a water sports facility as well as providing a 25-mile cycle track, pleasure boat cruises, a nature reserve and a bird watching centre.

The £115 million project, apart from laying more than 40kms (25 miles) of new pipes, will include developing larger wetland areas and lagoons to maintain a suitable habitat for wildlife, which will be supported by an independent water supply. This will ensure that if the water level of the reservoir dips, the lagoon and wetland areas will still be able to support the large variety of wildfowl that enjoy their habitat there.

The 100,000 Leicester based homes the Rutland water project is expected to service are due to complete in 2010.
